The problem

When Vo 1.0 was initially designed the front-end developers were not included during the design phase and were only handed the We had only handed it over to them to code - this made us come up with components there were not usable in the live product.

  1. We did not include the brand designers and marketing managers - who mostly set the tone for marketing. This made us come up with styles that did not fit well into the existing marketing structure and materials.

Months had passed since Vo 1.0, the Head of Design I worked with had left, of which I became the Head of Design. I was working to refine the Design System alongside an Associate Product Designer.

I realised two mistakes we made while creating the first version of our design system.

  1. We did not include the front-end developers during the design phase. We had only handed it over to them to code - this made us come up with components there were not usable in the live product.

  2. We did not include the brand designers and marketing managers - who mostly set the tone for marketing. This made us come up with styles that did not fit well into the existing marketing structure and materials.

My experience

Working as a product designer on this project was a valuable and enlightening experience for me. This was the first time I had been tasked with designing a complex product entirely on my own, which required extensive research and study to develop an intuitive design that adequately addressed the problem and communicated the solution effectively to the user.

Throughout the project, I worked closely with the team, and I was fortunate to be part of a highly communicative and supportive group. This enabled me to have my ideas and suggestions heard every step of the way, and I felt valued as a team member.

As the product designer, I was responsible for developing the product's user interface and user experience, ensuring that it was intuitive and easy to navigate while also being aesthetically pleasing. This involved creating wireframes, designing visual layouts and prototypes, and conducting user testing to gain feedback and iterate on the design.

To achieve the product's objectives, I worked tirelessly to ensure that the design addressed the primary issues faced by financial institutions in their fight against fraud.

Overall, working on this product was an incredibly rewarding experience for me as a product designer. I learned a great deal about designing complex products, collaborating with a team, and implementing effective solutions to real-world problems.

Takeaways

What I learnt from this

What I learnt from this

Undertaking the design of this product proved to be a fantastic opportunity for me to learn a great deal about the importance of research in the design process. It taught me how to make data-driven design decisions that enable users to have the best possible experience. By embracing data-driven design, I could optimize the product to meet users' needs and expectations, ensuring that it delivers the desired outcome.

In addition, I also learned the importance of asking questions until I understood the problem fully. Asking the right questions enabled me to gain a better understanding of the users' pain points and needs, ensuring that the product was tailored to meet their requirements.

Working on this product also highlighted how crucial it is to have a supportive team in place to ensure the success of the project. The team members were always willing to lend their support and expertise, which was invaluable. It made me appreciate the benefits of collaboration and how it can enhance the design process.

Finally, designing this product helped me to develop an appreciation for the importance of properly handing over designs to the developers for implementation. By ensuring that the design was handed over appropriately, I could ensure that the final product was as close to the original design as possible, delivering an optimal user experience.

In summary, this project provided me with a valuable learning opportunity, highlighting the importance of research, data-driven design, asking the right questions, having a supportive team in place, collaborating effectively, and the significance of proper handover of designs for implementation.
